Last night, my wife and I watched Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer on CBS. For both of us, this has always been a holiday tradition.
For me it was always, The Little Drummer Boy, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer that were my favorites as a kid, and even as an adult.
However, to me there has always been something special about Rudolph.
As I watched it last night, I thought about how it really was one of the first cartoons that really looked at how we are judged and forced into being identical.
No one, except for Clarice Hermey and Yukon Cornelius were willing to accept Rudolph in the beginning, even his own father and Santa rejected him at first.
This was long before the concept of bullying became a battle cry, yet what is sad in a way, how little time has changed.
We still have children bullied and rejected by family and friends alike.
Yet what is heart warming is that Rudolph is still there for all the misfits as he was 48 years before.
Rudolph stand up to the test of time, because he still shows us that we all can belong. No matter how bad your day is, or week or life Rudolph shows that we all can fit in.

Rudolph had to learn like so many of us that we can be individuals and that we do not have to fit the mold society says we have to be. Great post!
ReplyDeleteActually Society had to learn to accept Hermy and Rudolph as individuals. Rudolph and Heimey had no problem with who they were, it was Santa and the Elves and Reindeer that could not accept them.
ReplyDeleteSo much of our life we waste pretending to be something we do not want to be, because from early on we are told we can not be who we really are meant to be.
Rudolph is still the accept ion in our culture not the norm.
We have along way to go before we have Rudolphs and Heimeys as every day part of the world, because we shun the true spirit of individuality and still demand conformity.
